Chapter 6

The flight to the city was tense but smooth, the massive luxury helicopter cutting through the blizzard with ease. Winston sat in the plush leather seat beside the medical stretcher, holding Trey’s small hand. The boy had finally fallen into a deep, medicated sleep, his chest rising and falling evenly beneath the thick thermal blankets.

Winston looked out the window at the dark, frozen landscape below. He thought of his late daughter, Sarah. She had been the light of his life, a brilliant, compassionate woman who had unfortunately fallen for a man who looked the part of a prince but possessed the spine of a jellyfish. When she died of a sudden aneurysm two years ago, Winston had promised to look after her son. He had failed to see how quickly the vultures would circle.

"Never again," Winston whispered into the dark cabin. "I will never let them touch you again."

An hour later, they landed on the illuminated rooftop helipad of Winston's private medical facility. A team of top-tier pediatricians was waiting. They whisked Trey away to a VIP recovery suite, leaving Winston in the sterile, quiet hallway.

Marcus stepped out of the elevator, his tactical gear replaced by a sharp, dark suit. He walked up to his boss, his expression grave.

"Sir," Marcus said quietly. "I have an update on the estate."

"Did they freeze to death?" Winston asked casually, pouring himself a cup of black coffee from the waiting room station.

"No, sir. They made it to the security gatehouse at the bottom of the property. My men let them inside before they lost any toes. We aren't murderers, after all."

"Pity," Winston took a sip of the bitter coffee. "What did they do once they thawed out?"

"Eleanor used the security landline to call the state police," Marcus reported, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "She claimed you broke into their home, assaulted her, kidnapped their son, and threw them out into a blizzard."

Winston chuckled. The handsome look of his old age deepened with amusement. "She is predictable, I will give her that. Did the police pick them up?"

"Yes, sir. Two cruisers arrived ten minutes ago. They have Eleanor and Preston in the back. They are currently en route to the precinct to file formal kidnapping and assault charges against you."

Winston set his coffee cup down. He adjusted the collar of his black cashmere turtleneck, his deep mahogany skin radiating absolute confidence.

"Perfect," Winston said. "Marcus, contact our legal team. Have them meet me at the precinct. And bring the encrypted tablet with the security footage from the estate."

"Already in the car, Boss," Marcus nodded.

"Eleanor wants to play the victim," Winston mused, walking toward the elevator. "Let's go show the detectives exactly what kind of monster they have sitting in their patrol car."

As the elevator doors closed, Winston's mind began to churn. Preston was a coward, yes, but Eleanor's cruelty seemed too calculated. Leaving a child out in a storm wasn't just punishment; it was an execution attempt. There was a financial motive here that went deeper than just wanting the house. Winston intended to peel back every layer of their miserable lives until he found the truth.
