Chapter 1

The cemetery was bathed in bright, natural light, a crisp cinematic brilliance entirely devoid of any dull or yellow tint. The pristine white marble of the graves gleamed perfectly under the mid-morning sun, surrounded by vibrant green grass and meticulously arranged flower baskets. Grace Harper knelt on the manicured lawn, her fair, rosy skin contrasting with the stark black of her modest maid uniform. At twenty-five, she possessed a breathless, movie-star beauty that not even her simple apron, plain cardigan, or practical flats could diminish. Around her wrist hung an antique silver bracelet, the only piece of her late mother she had left.
At five months pregnant, Grace moved carefully, arranging a fresh bouquet of white daisies against the marble headstone.
"Did you really think you could hide here?" a sharp, venomous voice cut through the serene, quiet air.
Grace gasped, her heart hammering as she looked up. Standing over her was Vanessa Caldwell. At thirty-one, the Senator’s daughter was draped in an immaculate ivory designer coat, her fingers glittering with heavy diamond jewelry. Beside Vanessa stood her older brother, Marcus Caldwell, thirty-eight, wearing an expensive dark suit, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. Both possessed the fair, rosy complexions typical of their elite American pedigree, but their faces were twisted with ugly, unadulterated malice.
"Mrs. Caldwell," Grace said, her American accent trembling slightly as she tried to stand. "I'm just visiting my mother. Please, leave me alone."
"Leave you alone?" Vanessa sneered, stepping closer, her expensive heels sinking slightly into the soft earth. "You seduced my husband. You flaunted yourself around my estate like a common tramp, and now you think you can just run away?"
"I never touched your husband!" Grace pleaded, her eyes wide with desperation. "He cornered me! I fought him off and quit! I swear to you!"
"Liar!" Vanessa shrieked.
Without warning, Vanessa’s diamond-adorned hand whipped through the bright air. She violently slapped the pregnant maid across the face. The sharp, echoing crack shattered the tranquility of the cemetery.
Grace crashed heavily onto her knees in the damp dirt. She instantly curled forward, throwing both of her arms over her swollen belly to shield her unborn child from the impact. A thin trickle of bright red blood appeared at the corner of her lips.
"You are nothing," Vanessa spat. She reached down and brutally ripped the antique silver bracelet from Grace’s wrist. The delicate clasp snapped. Vanessa threw the heirloom directly into a puddle of dark mud.
"Please, my mother gave me that," Grace wept, reaching for the mud.

Vanessa stepped forward and brought her heel down hard, crushing the fresh daisies Grace had just laid for her mother. She leaned over, her face a mask of vicious contempt.
"A maid carrying my husband’s baby belongs in the dirt," Vanessa hissed viciously.
