Chapter 1

The crisp evening air of the alleyway was a sharp contrast to the suffocating heat of the hotel ballroom. Alexander Sterling stood near the heavy steel service doors, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored formal suit. His fair, rosy skin caught the bright, cinematic spill of light from the streetlamps. At forty-two, he was a man accustomed to control, his expensive dress shirt, silk tie, and polished shoes a testament to the empire he had built while working overseas. He checked his luxury wristwatch, eager for the charity gala inside to end so he could finally return to his family estate.

A sudden, frantic rustling from the massive industrial dumpsters caught his attention.

Alexander stiffened, expecting a stray animal. Instead, a small figure in a faded party dress and worn sneakers was leaning dangerously over the edge of the metal bin. Alexander took a step forward, his polished shoes silent against the pavement. He reached out and grabbed the child’s waist, pulling her backward before she could fall in.

"Hey, what are you doing in there?" Alexander asked, his voice firm but not unkind. "It's not safe."

The little girl spun around, clutching a small plastic bag filled with discarded bread and half-eaten pastries. In her other hand, she gripped a piece of moldy bread as if it were solid gold.

Alexander froze. The breath was violently knocked from his lungs. Beneath the grime, soot, and matted hair, the fair, rosy complexion of the child was unmistakable. It was his daughter.

He fell to his knees on the filthy asphalt, staring at her dirty face and bare, bruised legs beneath the hem of her worn dress.

"Sophia?" Alexander breathed out, his mind completely fracturing. He had been sending money home for two years. She was supposed to be in elite boarding schools, cared for by his mother.

Sophia’s eyes widened with a desperate, shattering hope. Her lower lip trembled, and she dropped the plastic bag. Her voice cracked through a devastating mixture of starvation and terror. “Daddy?”

Alexander didn't hesitate. He lunged forward and lifted Sophia into his arms, crushing her against his chest. She immediately gripped the moldy bread against the pristine fabric of his expensive suit, burying her dirty, tear-streaked face into his neck.

Alexander pulled back just enough to search her face. The hollows of her cheeks, the sheer terror in her bright eyes—it was a nightmare made flesh. The blood drained entirely from his fair face.

"Why..." Alexander stammered, his voice shaking with a potent cocktail of heartbreak and rising, uncontrollable fury. "Why look for food in the trash?"

"I was so hungry, Daddy," Sophia whimpered, clinging to his tie. "They said I wasn't allowed inside where the bright lights are."
