Chapter 8

The days following Christmas were a chaotic, brutal symphony of destruction for the Ashford family. The news of Robert Ashford’s sudden, catastrophic financial ruin spread through the city's elite circles like a highly contagious virus. The very people who had attended his lavish parties were the first to distance themselves, terrified that the financial contagion might somehow spread to them.

Bennett monitored the fallout from the absolute safety of his high-rise penthouse, his handsome face betraying no emotion as he reviewed the daily intelligence reports provided by Marcus.

"It's a total collapse, Boss," Marcus reported during their morning briefing over an encrypted video link. "The bank moved incredibly fast. Without the shell companies to back the collateral, they called in the loans on the primary estate. Robert and Helen were served with an eviction notice this morning."

Bennett leaned back in his tailored vest, sipping his coffee. "And Clara?"

"Clara’s husband filed for divorce the moment he realized her trust fund was vaporized," Marcus chuckled grimly. "She’s currently living in a cheap motel near the airport."

"And Silas?" Bennett asked, his tone turning noticeably colder.

"Still recovering from the facial reconstruction surgery," Marcus replied, checking a file. "But without the premium insurance, the hospital dumped him into a public recovery ward. He’s been trying to reach out to some of Robert’s old business associates for a loan, but nobody is taking his calls. The word is out on the street. The Ashfords are toxic."

"Excellent," Bennett murmured, setting his coffee cup down. "They relied entirely on their money to command respect. Now they are nothing. They are exactly where they belong."

The heavy mahogany door to the office creaked open slightly. Josephine peeked her head around the corner, wearing a bright pink princess dress and holding a small, pristine stuffed bear. Her fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with excitement.

"Daddy?" she asked softly. "Are you busy?"

Bennett instantly cut the video feed to Marcus. The cold, calculating Mafia boss vanished, replaced entirely by the devoted, loving father.

"I am never too busy for you, Jo," Bennett smiled warmly, pushing his chair back and holding his arms open.

Josephine ran into the office and climbed happily onto his lap, hugging the stuffed bear tightly. "Can we go to the park today? You promised we could feed the ducks."

"A promise is a promise," Bennett agreed, kissing the top of her head. "Go get your coat and your boots, and we'll head out right now."

As Josephine scrambled off his lap and ran back toward her bedroom, the encrypted phone on Bennett’s desk vibrated softly. It wasn't a call; it was an urgent text message from Marcus.

[ALERT: Robert has secured a meeting with Don Moretti. They are convening at the docks tonight. He is trying to sell your location in exchange for protection and a loan.]

Bennett stared at the message, the warm smile instantly sliding off his handsome face. He had anticipated that his grandfather would become desperate, but reaching out to the Moretti family—a violent, rival syndicate that had spent years trying to muscle into Bennett’s newly acquired territory—was a massive escalation. Robert wasn't just begging for money; he was actively attempting to arrange a hit on his own grandson.

Bennett’s jaw clenched, his eyes turning to icy steel. The financial ruin clearly hadn't been enough to break his grandfather’s arrogance. The old man still believed he could play the game.

Bennett quickly typed a reply to Marcus.

[Mobilize the heavy teams. We are going to the docks tonight. It’s time to end this.]
