Chapter 1

The air inside the adjoining Mafia council room was thick with the scent of expensive cigars and aged bourbon, but the atmosphere was anything but relaxed. The bright, cinematic lighting of the sprawling estate filtered through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a crisp, natural glow that was entirely free of any sickly yellow tint. At the head of the heavy mahogany table sat Nia. At twenty-eight years old, she was a vision of absolute, terrifying power. Her rich, warm bronze skin glowed flawlessly against the stunning emerald green silk of her evening gown. The fabric draped over her elegant frame, a daring thigh-high slit exposing one perfectly toned leg ending in strappy metallic stilettos.
As the newly appointed head of the organization, Nia’s presence demanded absolute submission. The heavy diamond drop earrings framing her face caught the light with every subtle movement, but it was the family signet ring resting on her finger that held the true weight of the room. The white American Capos and bodyguards surrounding the table watched her with a mixture of reverence and underlying tension. She was the adopted daughter who had outmaneuvered them all, earning the throne through sheer intellect and ruthlessness.
"The docks are secured, Boss," muttered one of the older Capos, adjusting his tailored suit. "But your father’s old associates are asking questions. They want to know if the transition of power includes a shift in our distribution percentages."
"My father is retired," Nia replied, her voice a smooth, dangerous purr that silenced the room instantly. "Arthur no longer sets the percentages. I do. If they have questions, they can direct them to my office. If they bypass me again, cut their supply entirely."
"Understood, Nia," the Capo swallowed hard, nodding quickly.
Nia casually adjusted the luxury gold watch on her left wrist, preparing to dismiss the council, when a sharp, muffled sound echoed through the heavy oak doors connecting to the main dining room. It wasn't the sound of clinking silverware or polite family chatter. It was the sickening thud of furniture hitting the floor, followed immediately by a sharp, breathless gasp.
Every instinct Nia possessed flared to life. The matriarchal elegance melted away, replaced instantly by the cold, lethal instincts of a cartel leader. She didn't excuse herself. She simply stood up, the emerald silk rustling sharply around her legs, and strode toward the heavy doors.
"Wait here," Nia commanded, her tone leaving absolutely no room for debate.
She pushed the heavy oak doors open, stepping into the grand dining room. The space was impeccably decorated with a long family table, plush upholstered chairs, and a freestanding wooden chess table in the corner. Framed family portraits of the fair-skinned, rosy-cheeked dynasty stared down from the walls.

But Nia’s eyes bypassed the luxury entirely. They locked onto the center of the room, and the blood in her veins instantly turned to ice. Her four-year-old son, Julian, was in the center of the chaos.
"Julian!" Nia yelled, the composed facade shattering into pure, maternal terror as she took in the horrific scene unfolding beneath the bright, unforgiving lights of her family's home.
